How do you give learners ownership in developing a personal visual voice that is inspired by what interests them in their world? Intrigue them through carefully formulated questions and choice challenges that guide them to the discovery of their own “big ideas.” They will come away thinking like a professional photographer and creating meaningful works of art.

Connie Lavelle has a dual degree in art education and design in ceramics with an art history minor. She became National Board Certified in 2010 and reachieved certification in 2019. Connie has received the Power of Art 20th Anniversary Celebration Award, featured in the Teachers Leading Change documentary; the Minx M. Auerbach Award for Excellence in Education; and the Judy Chicago Art Education Award.
Sarah DeKett
BA Art Education; MA Humanities; Art Educator, Traverse City, Michigan
Sarah DeKett is an art educator, maker, and creator currently teaching middle school photography in Traverse City, Michigan, where her students are producing award-winning photographs at the local and state level. Sarah has presented on the topic of teaching digital photography at state and national conferences and has been a guest on the Everyday Art Room podcast.
